My Mermaid Story, well some of it

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live under the sea, swimming with the fish and exploring the depths of the ocean? For Sarah Jones, this dream became a reality through a fascinating transformation into a mystical creature known as a mermaid.

What Inspired me

In 2011 I was a flight attendant and I was able to travel to different places. On a visit to Ko'olina, Oahu I got to see Mermaid Kariel perform as a mermaid in the most amazing tail. Shortly after I visited a Mermaid Bar in Florida where mermaid swam in a pool as we ate dinner and talked story. It was then that I had the idea of brining this mermaid world home to Maui. With a vision to connect with the youth and share Hawaiian culture through songs (mele) and a little Hawaiian language & history.

Unveiling the Mysterious Process

The journey to becoming a mermaid is not an easy one. It involves a series of intricate steps that require dedication, patience, and a deep connection to the ocean, for Sarah this came very natural. The process begins with a profound desire to embrace the underwater world and a willingness to undergo a profound metamorphosis. Mertailor's Eric Ducharme made Sarah's dream become a reality when she received her first silicone mermaid tail.

Mastering the Art of Tail Shifting

One of the most challenging aspects of becoming a mermaid is mastering the art of tail shifting. This process involves the gradual transformation of legs into a sleek and powerful mermaid tail. Through a combination of physical exercises, energy work, and visualization techniques, the individual learns to navigate the waters with grace and agility.

Mermaids on Maui

In 2012 Sarah launched her business "Mermaids on Maui" a dear friend Shannon Dudley created a website for her and she had her first Underwater Professional Photo Shoot with Erik Aeder in the waters of Ka'anapali. Sarah then took her vision to perform for guests as a real life mermaid to resorts around the island. There were many looks of confusion and many no's. On one specific day Sarah and her mermaid sister Tasha Goldberg had visited hotels on the southside of the island, their last stop was the Fairmont Kea Lani. It was there that everything changed, Jonelle Kamai at the time was the Director of Customer Service. Jonelle a young mother as well, thought it was an amazing idea and gave them their first big YES. After months of collaboration and pivots Jonelle and Sarah began Mermaid Univeristy, the first mermaid school in Hawaii. The Fairmont Kea Lani and Mermaids on Maui offered weekly mermaid classes for kids between the ages of 7-12. Private events and classes were offered as Sarah reminisces of Dorothy a 75 year old Grandma who booked her for a mermaid class. Dorothy wanted to do something extraordinary. Dorothy invited her daughters and granddaughters, the girls coordinated their nail polish with their tails and have the most unforgettable time. Sarah had 2 lovely successful years running Mermaid University and each class she was rewarded with love that will always hold a place in her heart. Each smile, each mermaid that kept trying and never gave up, each adve.nture will never fade. Sarah was blessed to work with strong mermaids Tasha Goldberg "Mermaid Malie", Jasmine Fultcher "Mermaid Mahina, Mermaid Malia, Chelsie VanBuren "Mermaid Hokulani, Heather Ko'omoa "Mermaid Minoaka" and friends and family that supported her dreams. Sarah is forever grateful for those who believed in her when others did not. In 2019, Sarah sold Mermaids on Maui but continues mermaid work through volunteer work, mermaid photo shots, mermaid parties and acts of aloha.
